Alas, like the AAA Bisons, there will be no joy in Mudville, or in Binghamton in 2011. Like the Bisons, the B-Mets have had a season where they had to plug holes. One or two were in the rotation, when Mark Cohoon and Dylan Owen were called up to AAA. But the rest of their problems stem from lack of production from many of their key players.

Pitching – There have been some miserable failures this season at Bingo, none so glaring as within the starting rotation. Brad Holt (4-7) and Robert Carson (2-8) have been dreadful. Matt Harvey has struggled, as has Tobi Stoner. Familia, who was pitching well, was shut down, with a shoulder impingement. The only reliable starters have been Brandon Moore, 8-7, 3.73 ERA and Collin McHugh, 3-2, 4.28 ERA. Contributions from the pen have been weak and uneven. As a staff the B-Mets are 10th in the Eastern League in ERA and strikeouts, and 1st in the league in walks, hits, and runs, given up.

Hitting – Yuch! It’s been just as awful. Two players, outfielders Carlos Guzman (.228) and Lorenzo Scott (.148), were released earlier in the season because they were sucking wind. Eric Campbell is just now starting to hit after a season long slump. Matt Den Dekker has struggled mightily since his call-up from St. Lucie. Brahiam Maldonado is hitting .207 for the year. Catcher Kai Gronauer and 2B Reese Havens have missed most of the season with injuries. Infielder Josh Satin (.325) was recently promoted to Buffalo, which leaves 2B-SS Jordany Valdespin as the only B-Mets player to be having an exceptional year with the bat. “Spin” is hitting .303 with an OPS of .843. Unfortunately, his 27 errors this year show a big need for improvement in the field. The B-Mets are 9th in the Eastern League in batting average and runs scored.

Overall – I’m glad there’s always next year, cause they really suck. Wally Backman, or no Wally Backman. With a little over a month left to go in the AA season, the B-Mets are mired in last place with the worst record in the league, at 41-61. And that’s not a typo.

Next up! High A, St. Lucie
