Following 2012, the Binghamton Mets will be but a distant memory, says the Ottawa Citizen. The Double-A club is being purchased by Beacon Sports Capital Partners and will move to Ottawa after calling Binghamton home since 1992.
This however, does not mean the Mets would have a minor league baseball in Canada. With their contract expiring with Binghamton after 2012, the squad would likely join the Toronto Blue Jays organization; putting the Amazin’s in the market for a new AA affiliate.
Binghamton NYSEG Stadium though, will still have baseball in 2013, though chances are it won’t be a Mets team playing there. It will likely be in the lower-level New York-Penn League, with a team coming in from Batavia; and the Mets already have the Cyclones in that league.
Adam Rubin of ESPN chimed in on the issues via twitter, saying that the Mets could also lose the Buffalo Bisons –their Triple-A ballclub– following ’12 as well. Rubin also speculated a few different scenarios for Binghamton’s replacement for the Double-A team, citing New Hampshire and New Britain as possibilities.
My Idea: I’d like to see the Cyclones become a Double-A team. It’s a very popular minor league club, imagine how much more popular it would be with top prospects on both sides of the diamond and while playing on a more competitive level. However the Mets have plenty of available options for replacing their AA and possibly AAA affiliates.
