“Mark Madoff took his own life today. This is a terrible and unnecessary tragedy,” said Martin Flumenbaum, an attorney representing Mark and his brother Andrew. “Mark was an innocent victim of his father’s monstrous crime who succumbed to two years of unrelenting pressure from false accusations and innuendo.”

According to a report in the NY Post, Bernard Madoff’s son Mark was found dead in his SoHo apartment this morning, sources said.

Officers were called to 158 Mercer Street to respond to a report that Mark Madoff was hanging in his apartment.

He was found at 7:30 a.m. by his father-in-law, said police sources.

There was no note, the sources said.

Mark MadoffThe younger Madoff, 46, had been “unalterably bitter” over his father’s deception, a spokesman told the Wall Street Journal recently.

Mark Madoff and his brother, Andrew, were sued this week by Irving Picard, the court-appointed trustee recovering assets for the victims of Bernard Madoff’s $65 billion Ponzi scheme.

Both brothers were brokers in their father’s firm, and have said repeatedly they didn’t know of their father’s crimes.

Today is the two-year anniversary of the arrest of Bernie Madoff, who pleaded guilty to 11 federal crimes and admitted to turning his wealth management business into a massive scheme that defrauded thousands of investors of billions of dollars.

I don’t know how Bernie Madoff lives with himself.
