Update 4/21 1:30 PM

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Dr. Steadman, who performed the surgery on Carlos Beltran in January, told Carlos Beltran he should not run until all ‘hot spots,’ or bone bruises, are healed in his knee.

However, Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus is accusing the Mets of another coverup and writes,

Hearing that Beltran’s exam was more negative than is being let on. “No progress, none at all.” Curious if Boras will comment.

I’m sure the truth lies somewhere in between. Carroll has always been a bit of an alarmist when it comes to player injuries.

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Carlos Beltran was told he cannot begin running or perform any other other baseball activities during a visit Tuesday to the doctors who performed his surgery in Vail, Colorado.

The news clearly indicates the mid-May target for Beltran’s return is unrealistic. Beltran had hoped to be running about April 10. He underwent Jan. 13 surgery for an arthritic knee to remove damaged cartilage.

Obviously, this classifies as a major setback, and I hope the Mets will address the media and tell us exactly want the plan is moving forward.

In the meantime, I hope we’ve seen the last of Gary Matthews Jr. in centerfield.

At this point, Angel Pagan should clearly be the everyday centerfielder until Beltran does return. I’m tired of these ever-changing lineups Jerry Manuel continues to put on the field.

We need an everyday lineup that can play together everyday and begin to gel. No more platoons… No more head scratchers in the cleanup spot… Stop playing these silly games and learn who your best players are and play them everyday.

Also, Ryota Igarashi suffered a strained left hamstring, and he will undergo an MRI on Wednesday.
