The Mets announced on Wednesday that the MRI on Brett Baty’s right thumb revealed no structural damage and that the star prospect is considered day-to-day with inflammation.

Baty was taken out of the Triple-A Syracuse Mets game on Tuesday as a precaution after he was in some pain following a swing. The soreness is in his right thumb, the same one he had surgery for a torn UCL last September.

Brett Baty left Tuesday’s game with right thumb soreness. He’ll have imaging done Wednesday.

Brett Baty was removed from a Triple-A Syracuse game Tuesday afternoon after the fourth inning. A trainer had previously checked on Baty during his second at-bat of the game. There’s no word yet on the extent of Baty’s injury.

Baty had singled, stole second, and scored his first go around, then he walked and was forced out at second during his second at-bat. During this plate appearance, he swung and missed at a pitch, shook his right hand (the same hand he had thumb surgery on last year) then eventually walked. He played another inning in the field, then was replaced by Jose Peraza.

The 23-year-old has had a scorching start to his Triple-A season after a great spring. After two plate appearances Monday, he’s gone 6-for-15 with two walks—good enough for an OPS over 1.300.

The Mets made the decision to start Baty’s season in Syracuse despite getting on base 20 times in 23 games (he had a .325/.460/.425/.885 slash line) and their slated starter—Eduardo Escobar—struggling with the Mets and Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic.

We’ll update with more information as it comes along.

Tommy Hunter to the IL

In other injury news, Tommy Hunter was placed on the injured list with back spasms. Denyi Reyes was summoned to the major league team in his place.

To make room on the 40-man roster, Bryce Montes de Oca (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day IL.
