Even at 44-years-old and with 20 big league seasons under his belt, Bartolo Colon isn’t completely ready to hang up his cleats.
On Saturday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reported that Big Sexy could consider inking a minor league deal, but only with the New York Mets. However, Puma adds that the Mets interest at this point is “minimal.”
The right-hander split last season between the Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins and registered a 7-14 record with a 6.48 ERA, 5.21 FIP, 1.587 WHIP and 5.6 K/9 in 28 games started (143.0 innings pitched).
Prior to the 2014 season, Colon signed a two-year, $20 million deal with New York. He then came back on for the 2016 season, where he had his best season in blue and orange, logging a 15-8 record with a 3.43 ERA over 191.2 innings pitched.
It’s surprising that the Mets don’t at least have interest in bringing back Colon. They very much need starting pitching depth and they’re already acquainted with his services, plus he won’t break the bank which we all know has been a major theme of this offseason.
Colon has a lifetime record of 240-176 and 2,454 career strikeouts with 10 different major league squads.
