Mets owner Fred Wilpon reportedly blew a gasket after learning that the crosstown Yankees had acquired Marlins superstar Giancarlo Stanton, according to a report by Mike Puma of the New York Post.

“Fred is pissed every time the Yankees make a move,” said a person who speaks to Wilpon regarding baseball matters. “And he always seems surprised.”

What irks Wilpon the most is the Yankees’ willingness to take on huge contracts and embarrassing the Mets in the process for frequently choosing to keep their payroll among the bottom third of all MLB teams.

When the Yankees acquired Stanton earlier this month for Starlin Castro and two prospects, they took on the $265 million remaining on the premier slugger’s contract if he doesn’t opt out.

Puma writes that Wilpon has a longstanding belief that spending the way the Yankees do is an “unsustainable” economic model, and yet the Bombers keep proving him wrong and in the process show their fans that winning is everything.

As usual, Wilpon declined comment. It’s been years since he’s taken questions about the team and he prefers to remain in obscurity rather than face the music and respond to a disenfranchised fan base that is overwhelmingly sick of how him and his son Jeff runs the team.

The Mets are expected to slash last season’s $155 million payroll with several reports putting their new ceiling at $130 million or less.

So far this offseason, after seeing most of their primary targets rebuff them and sign with other teams, the Mets added 32-year old reliever Anthony Swarzak, who is coming off a solid walk year after a mostly pedestrian career.

That’s it… Almost two months into the off season and Sandy Alderson is opting to wait the markets out with the hope that he can pick up some table scraps at reduced rates and hope it’s enough to overcome another 90 loss season.

There’s absolutely no interest in some of the top available free agents despite drastic needs up and down the roster, and a fan base that is losing their patience and demanding more.

What a freaking joke… The Wilpons are easily among the most despised owners in sports.
