Pete Alonso’s bat was quiet in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader between the Mets and Phillies, but he made up for it during Game 2 in the Mets 6-1 win.

In Game 2, Alonso went 3-for-5 with two home runs, two runs scored, and an impressive five RBIs. Polar Pete got the Mets on the board in the first inning with a two-run homer. His second home run was a three-home run in the top of the fifth inning that scored Nimmo and Cahna. A big-time blast that went 426 feet and 111.4 mph off the bat. It was the multi-homer game of the 2022 season for Alonso.

Alonso had four hard hit (95+ mph) in the second game of the doubleheader:

  • 111.4 mph
  • 104.5 mph
  • 103.5 mph
  • 96.8 mph

Alonso is batting .276/.333/.500, with a .833 OPS in 2022. He has scored 18 runs, five doubles, and seven home runs (including Sunday’s home runs against the Phillies). His 26 RBIs lead the National League and only the Guardians Jose Ramirez has more in the majors with 30.

Alonso got off to a little bit of a slow start this season, but over the last seven games he has a .357 batting average, a .379 on-base percentage, and is slugging .755. He has five runs, three home runs, a walk, and eight RBIs over the course off the last seven games.

Per Mathew Brownstein of Metsmerized, Alonso is one of just 23 players with at least 112 home runs in his first four major league seasons.

Buck Showalter spoke highly of Alonso’s day. He spoke on his ability to drive in runs and being able to pull on the inside pitch and make contact. “Guys who drive in runs can do that,” said Showalter. “You try to crowd him, you don’t get it in far enough, he’s going to hurt you there too.”

Showalter also mentioned being happy and more impressed with Alonso’s defensive play at first base, calling him “solid” at first.

Alonso met with the media after his much-needed power outburst in Game 2.

“That’s great, but we want to win the division,” said Alonso. “We’ve had a great start. We’ve run the bases well, we’ve hit well, and our pitching staff (starters or bullpen), we’ve played such great team baseball,” said Alonso who reiterated that everyone has answered the ‘bell’ when their number has been called or they’ve been asked to take the field. “Everyone’s doing an incredible job and I feel like we’re working incredibly well; It’s been so fun to play with these guys,” he said.
