With a double in the first inning of Sunday’s contest with the Cincinnati Reds, Pete Alonso became the first rookie in MLB history to have 50 home runs and 30 doubles in a season.
Alonso was then driven in by Robinson Cano for the first run of the game.
Alonso, 24, has had a storied campaign thus far. He won the Home Run Derby back in July, had an RBI in the All-Star Game, has set the Mets’ single season home run record, has broke the National League rookie home run record and is two long balls away from setting the MLB rookie home run record.
The first baseman and Florida native has been worth 5.1 bWAR while hitting .264/.364/.589 with 50 home runs and 115 RBI in 657 plate appearances.
With a week left in the season, Alonso has a golden opportunity to continue advancing his records and breaking even more.
