The New York Mets completed a doubleheader sweep of the Washington Nationals at Citi Field, courtesy of a perfectly timed walk-off homerun by Pete Alonso in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 Mets victory.

The Mets got the scoring started with a pair of runs in the fourth featuring an RBI single by J.D. Davis.

In the fifth inning, the Mets extended their lead to 4-1 after Jonathan Villar crushed his 13th homer of the season following a Michael Conforto single.

On the mound for the Mets and making his Mets debut was Trevor Williams. The veteran right-hander delivered a solid effort, pitching into the fifth inning and allowing just one earned run on a sac fly and three hits.  Williams walked a pair and struck out a couple.

The usually reliable Seth Lugo relieved Williams in the fifth and got the final two outs before pitching a scoreless sixth, with the only blemish a walk to Juan Soto.

The seventh inning proved to be disastrous for the Mets as Trevor May and Jeurys Familia failed to close it out.

After May loaded the bases, Familia looked like he was going to get out of trouble after a quick pop-out. But a wild pitch brought home a run and then Andrew Stevenson laced a single to right to bring home the tying runs.

However, the good times didn’t last long for the Nats as Pete Alonso delivered the big blow to seal the dramatic win for the Mets. Pete had three hits in the game but none bigger than his game-ending clout.

The Mets are now readying themselves for a big weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Buckle up, Mets fans.
