Pete Alonso slugged his first major league home run on Monday as the New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins, 7-3.

Alonso, playing in only his fourth major league game, crushed the first pitch he saw off of Marlins pitcher Drew Steckenrider to deep right center.  It was the centerpiece of a four-run ninth inning that carried the Mets to a 7-3 victory.

Alonso, 24, was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts when he came to bat with two men on the top of the ninth. The game was tied 3-3 as the inning started, but Dominic Smith led off with a single to left against the shift. Juan Lagares was up next and was drilled by a pitch as he attempted to bunt. Amed Rosario also went the other way as he singled to bring home Smith setting the stage for Alonso.

Alonso did not waste anytime as on the first pitch he saw from Steckenrider, smashed a three-run home run to the deepest part of Marlins Park. The ball traveled 444 feet and had an exit velocity of nearly 113 miles per hour. The pitch Alonso hit was a 95 mph fastball.

The ball was hit to right center giving the Mets three hits in the inning, all of them to the opposite field. That fact was not lost on Mets manager Mickey Callaway who said after the game when asked about Alonso’s first homer, “…we knew it was going to come at some point so it’s not a surprise but it’s still a special occasion for a young player…speaking of young players, we had Dom hit the other way against the shift…then Rosy (comes) up, (goes) the other way…they’re shifting Pete and he tries to stay through the ball and he hits a bomb to center because of the approach and these are our youngest players…it’s pretty neat.”

Through his first four games as a big-leaguer, Alonso is 7-for-17, hitting .412 with a 1.239 OPS. He has three doubles, one homer and six RBIs. Last season, he hit 36 home runs and a minor league high 119 RBIs between Double-A and Triple-A. He seems to be continuing his hot play at the big league level.

After the game, Alonso told the press that he was whisked into a shopping cart by the Mets on his way to the showers. On the way, the Mets players had a little fun and placed a few items in the cart with Alonso. When asked what those items were Pete responded, “(a) couple of eggs, BBQ sauce, beer, shaving cream, ketchup and mustard, maybe relish…a lot. That was really cool. I’ve never had that before.” The way Alonso is going, it could become a common occurrence.

No doubt this will be the first of many home runs Pete Alonso hits in the major leagues. His raw power and patience at the plate give him all the ingredients to become a top notch slugger for a long-time. But his first home run, will be a memory he and Mets fans, remember for a long, long time.
