Detroit Tigers vs Baltimore Orioles

Max Scherzer (18-5, 3.15) vs. Chris Tillman (13-6, 3.34)
Scherzer fronts the Tigers postseason rotation for the second straight year, coming off an 18-win season in which he outpitched his numbers. He did not face Baltimore this year, but he’s 3-1 with a 3.92 ERA lifetime against the O’s.
Tillman will be making his first career postseason start. The righty was the Orioles’ Opening Day starter, and saw his streak of 20 consecutive quality starts snapped in his season finale in Toronto.

Jason Vargas (11-10, 3.71) vs Jered Weaver (18-9, 3.59)
Vargas hit a slide in September, losing three times in his last four starts with a 9.00 ERA. But manager Ned Yost figures Vargas’ familiarity with his old team and stadium will help. The lefty held the Angels to one run in 6 1/3 on May 25 in Anaheim.
Weaver finally gets a crack at the postseason again, after his Angels missed out the last four years, and fittingly enters the American League Division Series as the bona-fide staff ace. He has a 2.61 ERA in 20 2/3 postseason innings from 2007-09.
