sandy alderson winter meetings (2)

Sandy Anderson still has at some shopping to do, according to a report on ESPN New York, who spoke with the Mets general manager.

“We’re still looking,” Alderson said about the bench. “It depends on what happens in the middle infield as to whether we need someone else on the bench. And as for how things look in the outfield, we’ve got people who can provide us some bench help. But I’d say right now we continue to look at what’s available and at what might be of value for us.”

He also remains in the market for a veteran bullpen arm which could come via a trade or signing a free agent veteran to a major league deal.

“We’re still looking,” the GM said about bullpen help. “There’s still a decent volume. Of course, that could come through free agency or trade. Let’s see how that works out.”

As far as adding a fifth starter, Alderson said there’s a probability he could bring in another starter on a minor league deal to compete with Jenrry Mejia and the other prospects in camp.

I don’t think the bullpen arm and backend starter is a real priority, but there’s nothing wrong with bringing in some extra arms to compete on minor league deals.

The bench of course, will remain in flux until the fates of Ike Davis, Lucas Duda and Ruben Tejada are ultimately decided.
