Sandy has done a lot of talking with very little action thus far.
Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson has not given the Mets fans much to be thankful for so far this offseason. It is almost the end of November, and all he has done is make a few minor league signings. At this point it’s tough to say whether or not the players he has signed thus far are going to help us next year or not. But from the looks of the numbers those players have put up over their careers, it does not look promising. And that’s putting it nicely.
There is plenty of time for things to change, but I am starting to think more and more that this is what we are going to see all offseason. I don’t believe Alderson will make any significant free agent additions. The only way he will make a significant addition to this team is via trades, and I won’t believe that is going to happen until I see it.
The winter meetings are coming up starting on December 3rd and running through the 6th. Alderson has said that he plans to have a resolution to the David Wright and R.A. Dickey contract negotiations by that time. Alderson wants clarity leading up to the winter meetings, and I’m assuming by clarity he means a signature on a contract. Alderson wants some answers by December 3rd so he knows going into the winter meetings if he is going to be shopping his star players. If one of them gets dealt we can expect a big return. But if both are kept we may be looking at another uneventful offseason.
If the Mets are able to re-sign both Wright and Dickey, be prepared that those may be the only two big moves we see this winter. If they are unsuccessful in their attempt to reach an agreement, then all bets are off and we may be in for an exciting winter.
