WFAN is confirming that the Mets have released Oliver Perez.
Perez was was informed as soon as he arrived at Digital Domain Park this morning, and then made the rounds shaking hands and saying goodbye to his teammates..
The club will eat the remaining $12 million dollars he is owed.
This spring, Perez failed to impress first as a starter, then as a reliever. He was on the verge of tears as he briefly spoke to reporters.
“You might know before,” Perez said. “But when they tell you, you don’t feel great. I think when you get fired, anywhere, you feel sad. It’s not a good moment.”
This ends the tenuous relationship between the enigmatic Oliver Perez and the Mets as they bite the bullet and rid themselves of a player who was signed to one of the worst contracts in team history.
I gotta give at least some credit to Sandy Alderson, who followed through on his promise that Perez and Luis Castillo would get a fair look in Spring Training and unless they could win a spot on this team they would be released. They are now both gone. Thankfully.
