As per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the New York Mets have placed infielder Adeiny Hechavarria on release waivers, making him a free agent once that process is complete. The Mets designated Hechavarria, 30, on August 9, one day before he was due to receive a $1 million roster bonus.

Over 151 plate appearances for New York this season, Hechavarria slashed .204/.252/.359 with five homers, seven doubles, 18 RBIs, and a 62 wRC+ rating, racking up -2.0 defensive runs saved and a -1.6 ultimate zone rating over 69 innings at shortstop (0 DRS, 0.5 UZR over 60 innings at third).

With Robinson Cano (torn left hamstring) on the shelf indefinitely and Jeff McNeil (strained left hamstring) currently residing on the 10-day injured list, the Mets will be relying on Joe Panik, Luis Guillorme, and Ruben Tejada, whose contract was selected by the Mets on Wednesday, to pick up the slack.

We’ll keep you posted as any new information becomes available.
