The last two months of the season, fans will be paying plenty of attention to the prospects the Mets traded for at the deadline. Luisangel Acuña and Drew Gilbert are arguably now the No. 1 and 2 prospects in the Mets’ farm system, and they both made their debuts at Double-A Binghamton over the last week. Now, they’re introducing themselves through the media.

Ahead of Binghamton’s series opener against the Somerset Patriots (an hour and a half away from Citi Field), both Acuña and Gilbert discussed their futures with the Mets.

“I expect to be there pretty soon,” Acuña quipped when asked about what it’d be like to play against his brother Ronald Acuña Jr. frequently. He’s currently slashing .308/.372/.438/.809 in his age-21 season. He said Francisco Álvarez reached out to him, too, and told him, “Keep working hard, and we’ll see each other soon.”

Gilbert took his time with media to talk about his dreams of winning a World Series with the Mets. His work ethic is important to him, too. “I’m not where I want to be yet, and I don’t think I’ll ever be where I want to be,” he said when asked what parts of his game he wants to improve. The 22-year-old has four hits in his first 11 at-bats with Binghamton, and his .828 OPS stands out in close to 400 plate appearances. He’s flashed leather in the outfield already, and Billy Eppler noted Gilbert plays with his “hair on fire.”

Both Acuña and Gilbert could ultimately make the Mets’ sell-off at the 2023 deadline worth it. The first two months in the team’s system will set a good impression.
