This is why we’ve been downplaying all these insane notions of bringing up Zack Wheeler in the last few months. As I said before, Collin McHugh is more deserving and more polished, and his debut today has validated everything we’ve been saying about him all season long.

McHugh won’t figure into the decision, but his performance today was definitely deserving of a win as the young righthander tossed seven scoreless innings and allowed two hits, one walk and struck out nine batters.

Mark Simon from ESPN Tweets:

The 7 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 9 K debut combo has only been done only three times since 1920; Juan Marichal (1960 Giants), Steve Woodard (1997 Brewers) and now Collin McHugh.

Wow…. What a way to break into the majors!
