Of course not…

K-Rod is the undisputed closer on this team, but will the addition of J.J. Putz create any friction?

Putz has been the Seattle Mariners closer for the last three seasons, and he fully expected to be the Mariners closer in 2009.

One has to wonder if there was any communication with Putz before the deal, to see how he felt about the situation and if he was fine knowing that he would be primarily a setup man for the Mets.

Luckily, Putz was a trooper when speaking to reporters.

“It’s a new challenge and I’m excited about it. I’m going to a new team that’s going to be very competitive. Francisco Rodriguez is a great closer and with Sean Green going as well, we should have a great bullpen.”

For the Mets, this was a no-brainer. Putz gives the Mets not only a proficient setup man, but he can also pick up the occasional save, and serve as insurance in the event of an injury to K-Rod.

Hopefully, Putz will see the opportunity as a chance to be a part of team that could be playing in the post season next fall.
