Update: Mets Trade Rule V Pick To Dodgers

With the seventh pick in the 2009 Rule 5 draft, the Mets selected pitcher, Carlos Monasterios, from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Monasterios, 23, has certainly made his way around the tri-state area over the past couple of years. In 2006, he was sent to Phillies by the Yankees in the trade that brought Bobby Abreu to New York.

Last season, Monasterios spent a majority of the season in Class A+ affiliate, the Clearwater Thrashers. In his first start of the season, Monasterios wowed teammates by pitching seven strong shut-out innings for a complete game win.

Overall throughout his time in Clearwater, he posted a 3.73 ERA in 82 innings with a very impressive 71:27 K:BB ratio.

This was certainly a great improvement over his 2008 campaign, in which he pitched to an ugly 5.63 ERA. As bad as 2008 may have been for Monasterios, it is important to note that he did maintain a K:BB ratio of 2:1.

While it may be impossible to tell how much of an impact Monasterios will make in Flushing, it certainly can never hurt for the team to stock up on young, quality arms.

UPDATE: Well that didn’t take very long. According to MetsBlog.com’s Matt Cerrone, the Mets have agreed to trade their Rule 5 Pick, Carlos Monasterios, to the Dodgers for cash considerations.
