David Stearns’ job as president of baseball operations is safe, but coming off two underachieving seasons, owner Steve Cohen wants to get him more help in the front office.

Cohen told SNY Saturday during an in-game interview that “voices” would be added to aid Stearns. The Athletic’s Will Sammon followed that up with a report posted Monday that it would “likely come in the form of senior advisors, special assistants or vice presidents.” Current special assistants include former players Carlos Beltran and J.D. Martinez.

“It doesn’t have to be a GM,” Cohen told SNY Saturday. “It could be other ways to support David and the front office, and I think the whole point is (to) get more opinions in the front office, and people who are pretty good either evaluating talent or people who’ve been in those positions before in the front office and high positions in the front office, and help David out and help the team out as far as getting different points of view.”

Sammon said the new hires, which likely won’t be announced until after the postseason, will be a strong presence in the front office.

Andy Green, who was the vice president for player development before stepping in as interim manager when the Mets fired Carlos Mendoza, could be part of the new hierarchy, Sammon reported. He could also return as manager. Green has gone 37-38 since taking over. He went 274-366 managing the Padres to fourth- and fifth-place finishes from 2016-2019.

Anonymous executives from other teams told Sammon that getting candidates to move to New York can be tough, especially for those with families. Another obstacle is the Mets’ poor play makes some worry that their jobs could be in jeopardy sooner rather than later.

“I’ve been working with the front office, and I’ve identified some things that we can do better,” Cohen told SNY. “I think they have really good processes up there, but I thought there were areas of improvement that we can work on, and that’s what we’ve been doing, and we’re going to try to add certain voices into the front office that I think will be helpful, and I know David supports that, and I’m looking forward to when we make those decisions, announcing it.”
