The Mets had themselves a hectic 24 hours at the trade deadline, dealing away about 20 percent of their active roster as they officially waved the white flag on the 2026 season.
Among those traded were Freddy Peralta, Luke Weaver, Huascar Brazoban, Clay Holmes, Tyrone Taylor and Brooks Raley. Five of them were on the active roster. The Athletic‘s Will Sammon said those who will be called up in their place are:
- Reliever Dedniel Núñez, who is making his return from Tommy John surgery
- Reliever Jefry Yan, who should be an entertaining watch
- Reliever Nate Lavender, who will make his MLB debut after a hectic last couple of years
- Reliever Chayce McDermott, who the Mets acquired from the Dodgers for Ben Rortvedt
- Pitcher Xzavion Curry, who has been up and down with the Mets multiple times this year
- Outfielder Cristian Pache, who is replacing Tyrone Taylor on the roster
The moves will likely be official on Tuesday ahead of the game. They’ll have to make one more corresponding move because there are only five active roster spots open right now.
The final two months of the season will include plenty of auditions for the 2027 team. Núñez and Lavender are two of the primary relievers to take a look at. Núñez had become an important part of the 2025 team before his injury, and Lavender was advancing in the Mets’ system before the Rays took him in the Rule 5 draft. Before he could pitch for the Rays, the lefty needed Tommy John surgery and was returned to the Mets at the end of the 2025 season.
At some point over the next two months, it’s reasonable to expect guys like Jonah Tong, Nick Morabito, Ryan Lambert, Dylan Ross and others to play for the Mets. For now, the first batch of replacements will get their chance to perform as the Mets head to Cleveland for a three-game series starting on Tuesday.
