Francisco Alvarez will be activated from the injured list ahead of the upcoming series against the Reds. This, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

Alvarez first went onto the IL after spraining the UCL in his right thumb, an injury which happened on August 17 while sliding headfirst into second base against the Mariners. The injury will require surgery which would have ended Alvarez’s season, but he and Mets brass have decided he can play through it for the team being.

His rehab was also affected after being hit by a pitch on August 27 that fractured his left pinky finger.

Hand injuries are nothing new for Alvarez, who fractured his left hamate bone during spring training and tore the UCL in his left thumb last season.

The Mets are hoping that their young catcher will continue mashing the ball, which is what he was doing before his injury, after a brief stint in the minor leagues. Alvarez was slashing .323/.408/.645 in that 21-game sample size.

Alvarez struggled at the plate during his rehab stint, going 4-for-20, but he hit a grand slam in his final game on Wednesday, and the team is hoping for more of the same upon his return.

Hayden Senger is the presumed candidate to head back to the minors, but with the expanded rosters in September, the team has more options than it otherwise would.
