The Mets have signed catcher Ali Sánchez to a minor league deal, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic. The former Met, who signed with the organization as an international free agent in 2013, played five major league games for them in 2020 before getting designated for assignment in February 2021 and subsequently traded to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Sánchez made pit stops with the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox earlier this season.
The move comes five days after Francisco Alvarez injured his right thumb sliding into second base, and while he may come back and play through the pain, there is a chance that he won’t be able to take the field again until 2026.
That leaves Luis Torrens and Hayden Senger as the only two catchers on New York’s 26- and 40-man rosters. Torrens has dealt with nicks and bruises all season long, and had his left hand wrapped on the bench on Thursday, making it seem as though he was unavailable unless Senger got injured.
Sánchez is just 28-years-old but has been unable to gain traction with any team. Sánchez played a career-high 34 games for the Miami Marlins in 2024, but hasn’t played in more than nine in the majors in any other year.
He is slashing .185/.222/.235 for his career with zero Defensive Runs Saved (DRS).
