LHP Sean Newcomb (0-0, 1.35) vs. LHP David Peterson (1-0, 0.00)

Every Mets home spring training game in 2025 has been against the Cardinals, Nationals, Marlins or Astros – until today! The Red Sox make the trip across Florida to face the Mets. For the Mets, it is the first of three home games (Rays on 3/17, Yankees on 3/24) against “new” opponents. Finally!

We are at the part of spring training now where everyday players and players in serious roster battles are seeing a significant portion of playing time in games. The results of the game still don’t mean anything, but they are becoming a better reflection as to how the team is doing. The Mets have won four of their last five and the Mets allowed all seven runs in their one loss late in the game.

It feels like the Mets are starting to click and players are building off of each other’s performances. In their last three games, Griffin Canning, Tylor Megill and Paul Blackburn have made back-to-back-to-back strong starts. David Peterson looks to keep that going this afternoon.

Game Notes

The position battle for the end of the rotation heated up on Wednesday when the previously-struggling Paul Blackburn tossed four perfect innings.

Nolan McLean tossed three scoreless innings in a minor league game on Tuesday. He was recently ranked as our No. 6 prospect in the Mets system.

The Mets scheduled pitchers following Peterson today: RHP Edwin Díaz, RHP Huascar Brazobán, LHP Génesis Cabrera and RHP Chris Devenski.

With Jeff McNeil dealing with an oblique strain, Carlos Mendoza said Luisangel Acuña, Brett Baty, Luis De Los Santos, and Donovan Walton will be competing for the last two spots on the Opening Day roster. McNeil is expected to miss three to four weeks in total.

Dedniel Núñez tossed two innings in live BP today and will make his Grapefruit League debut on Monday.

Three Things To Watch For

  1. David Peterson. Peterson has allowed two hits, two walks, and nothing else over seven innings in two starts this spring. He has also struck out seven batters. We are watching today to see if he can keep up with his numbers this month.
  2. Edwin Díaz: Díaz is scheduled to pitch in his third game today. His spring debut was rough – he allowed two runs on two hits and a walk. He was missing the zone and generally looked off. A few days later he looked better-ish. On the positive side, he struck out three. But, Díaz also walked two batters. Today we are watching for Díaz to have a clean, stress-free inning.
  3. Brandon NimmoNimmo returns to the lineup as the DH today! Nimmo is coming back from a knee injury. He received a gel injection about a week ago and was shut down from baseball activities for a few days after. Playing today is a significant step in getting ready for Opening Day!

Let’s go Mets!
