J.D. Martinez exited Tuesday’s game against the Athletics early after being hit by a 100 mph fastball on his left elbow in the bottom of the second inning.
Martinez remained in the game after the HBP and came around to score in the bottom of the inning on a Jose Iglesias RBI single. However, in the bottom of the third inning, Mark Vientos entered as a pinch hitter for Martinez as the DH exited the game.
Per Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets announced Martinez exited with a “left elbow contusion.”
Martinez is hitting .257/.345/.435 with a .781 OPS in 2024 with 12 homers and 53 RBIs. However, Martinez noticeably cooled over the past month, slashing just .143/.308/.238 in his last seven games. With the Mets in the thick of a playoff race, the Mets hope Martinez’s contusion won’t force him to miss too much time.
