The Mets announced on Friday they’ve claimed right-handed Heath Hembree off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, the Mets have transferred Jacob deGrom to the 60-day injured list.

In the press release the Mets said deGrom will be eligible to come off the IL on September 13th and there’s been no change in his timeline.

Hembree, 32, has an unsightly 6.38 ERA this season in 42 1/3 innings for the Reds, though he does have a 3.59 xFIP and 4.52 FIP. He also has the sixth highest strikeout rate in the majors at 14.5 K/9 and has allowed only 6.8 hits per nine innings. The big issue this season for Hembree has been the 10 home runs given up.

The former Red Sox reliever served as the Reds closer for a brief time in 2021, picking up eight saves.

Hembree is out of options and will be a free agent after the season.
