A day after news broke that the team had come to terms with right-handed reliever Trevor May on a two-year deal, the New York Mets made things official on Wednesday night.

Jeff Passan of ESPN released the details of the 31-year-old’s contract with the Mets and the team released a statement formally announcing the deal.

Per Passan, the financial terms of May’s deal have been set at $15.5 million over two seasons with “a potential for another $250,000 in performance bonuses each year”.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic filled in the gaps of May’s deal a short time later, confirming the former Twins pitcher would earn $7.75 million in 2021 and 2022, as well as “$50,000 each for 60, 65, and 70 appearances and $50,000 each for 60 and 70 innings”.

Since 2018, May’s pitched to a 3.19 ERA (3.56 FIP) with 153 strikeouts (12.29 K/9), 38 walks (3.05 BB/9), and 1.08 WHIP over 113 innings pitched.

Surrounded by a stable of quality arms in New York’s bullpen, the addition of May immensely solidifies the group’s depth and potential for effectiveness in what’s expected to be a big year in Flushing.

Mets team president Sandy Alderson intimated as much in a team-issued statement.

“Trevor has proven to be a quality performer over the last few seasons. His addition brings flexibility and added depth to our bullpen.”
