I can openly admit that I didn’t like the trade that sent prospects Luis Santana, Ross Adolph, and Scott Manea to the Astros in the offseason for infielder J.D. Davis.
Davis has proved me very wrong.
The former Astro provided heroics on Wednesday night with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to cap a two-run rally. It was the first career walk-off hit for Davis, but certainly not his only clutch hit recently. Six of the last seven times he’s driven in a run, that RBI has tied the game or given the Mets the lead.
Davis has hit .310/.372/.516 with 16 doubles, 15 homers, 44 RBI, and 134 wRC+ overall this season in 339 plate appearances. He’s been an absolute beast at Citi Field, he leads all major league hitters with at least 100 plate appearance at home this season with his 203 wRC+.
With the injuries to Dominic Smith and more recently Jeff McNeil, Davis has gotten consistent playing time and he’s running with, his .371 second half average and 171 wRC+ are both tops in the NL.
A jerseyless Davis talked to Steve Gelbs after his big hit, “I’ll tell you what, this team has no quit. We were grinding all game. … We just passed the baton. We had that New York swagger, that New York attitude. We didn’t quit! We didn’t quit!”
