Veteran lefty Justin Wilson struggled to get his Mets career off on the right foot battling injuries and effectiveness.
Through May 6, Wilson had a 4.82 ERA in 9.1 innings and hit the injured list twice with left elbow soreness.
The Mets activated Wilson on July 2 and he retired both batters he faced in that game. He retired both batters he faced in his next game four days later.
Wilson then delivered five straight scoreless appearances to give him 6.1 innings without allowing a run since coming off the IL. In that span, he’s allowed just three hits, walked one, and struck out four.
While the Mets bullpen was a disaster in the first half (5.63 ERA), Wilson has been a part an improved relief core that’s posted a National League best 2.43 ERA in the second half.
The 31-year-old is under contract with the Mets through the 2020 season.
