The New York Mets will activate Michael Conforto before Sunday’s game with the Detroit Tigers, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Conforto is coming off the 7-day IL due to a concussion suffered on May 16 in a game against the Washington Nationals.
Conforto, 26, has told the press that he has been symptom free for several days following the incident that occurred when he was hit in the jaw by teammate Robinson Cano‘s shoulder as they were both chasing a pop-fly. It has been speculated that organization wanted to make sure the outfielder was alright before he and the rest of the Mets journey west to Los Angeles following Sunday’s game.
To make room for Conforto on the roster, 38 year-old Rajai Davis has been designated for assignment. According to MLB.com the Mets are hoping he is not claimed by another team so he can stay with the Mets organization.
Davis carved out a little piece of Mets lore with his Uber trek from the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania to Citi Field on Wednesday, May 22. He was called up to the Mets when Brandon Nimmo was placed on the IL and the Mets needed another outfielder. Davis left Pennsylvania at around 5 p.m. and headed to Queens.
Davis arrived at Citi Field during the third inning of that night’s game also against the Nationals and didn’t meet Mets manager Mickey Callaway until around the “fifth or sixth inning.” But his little niche in Mets history came in the eighth inning of the game when Davis, in his first at-bat has a Met, slammed a three-run homer to cap a six run rally to lead the Mets to an eventual win. He is the 11th Met to hit a home run in his first at-bat with the team.
With Davis having been designated for assignment, the Mets will now have three players that are DFA’d and still unclaimed. These players are Davis, Paul Sewald and Tim Peterson.
Conforto is re-joining the Mets at a good time as they embark on a west coast trip the will start with four games against the Dodgers, the team with the best record in the National League. The trip concludes with three against the Arizona Diamondbacks before the Mets return home to face the San Francisco Giants on June 4.
