Prior to Sunday afternoon’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, the New York Mets announced that catcher Travis d’Arnaud has been designated for assignment, and Tomas Nido they’ve recalled Tomas Nido to fill his role of backup catcher.
“This is a great opportunity, I’m just trying to help the team win as many ball games as we can. When my name is in the lineup or I’m called into the game I’m just going to do everything possible to help this team win,” Nido told reporters pregame.
Nido certainly provided the Mets with a boost in his first game back. After taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh, the Mets were looking to add some insurance in the eighth. Wilson Ramos singled and both Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto drew a walk to load the bases.
With a depleted bench, the Mets were forced to send up Nido just hours after he returned to the club. After swinging through a first pitch fastball and watching a slider in the dirt, Nido lined a Matt Barnes fastball 1-1 the other way for a big two-run single to extend the lead Mets to 5-3.
“It felt really good to come in and contribute and help the team win.. That’s what it’s all about and that’s what I want to do.. I’m really happy I was able to help the team win,” Nido told reporters postgame.

For Nido, this was his first hit of the season with the Mets, as he went 0-for-6 in a brief stint with the team earlier in the year. Prior to the call-up, he was hitting .289/.300/.316 with a double and four runs batted in over twelve games with Triple-A Syracuse.
Thus far in a few stints at the big leagues Nido hasn’t provided much with the bat, though he is extremely strong behind the plate defensively. Hopefully the big hit in his first at-bat back will provide the young backstop with some confidence at the plate moving forward.
