Jed Lowrie played in his first rehab game today for the St. Lucie Mets in which he hit second in the order and started the game at shortstop.

Lowrie, 35, played all nine innings of the game, playing five innings at shortstop and four at second base. He also 0-4 at the plate.

The Mets signed Lowrie to a two-year, $20 million contract in the offseason with the expectation that he would play every day, most of the time at third base.

However, he suffered a sprained capsule in his left knee during Spring Training, which forced him to sit out all Grapefruit League games.

In the meantime, the Mets have been playing Todd Frazier at third base (since he returned from his own injury), Jeff McNeil in left field, and Robinson Cano at second base. Frazier is the player expected to lose the most playing time upon Lowrie’s return.

In 2018, Lowrie played for the Oakland Athletics in which he hit .267/.353/.448 with 23 home runs and 99 RBI to give himself a 122 wRC+ and 4.9 WAR.

On the defensive side of things, he split time between second base and the hot corner. At the keystone, he recorded one defensive run saved and a 6.1 UZR while he had -2 DRS and a -0.8 UZR at third base.
