Mickey Callaway announced before the game on Friday night that veteran infielder Jed Lowrie has begun playing in extended spring training games. He’s been getting up to eight at-bats in order to get him up to speed.

Callaway said he’s also played in the field some in Port St. Lucie, “he’s progressing nicely at this point.”

The Mets signed Lowrie to a two-year, $20 million this offseason. He has been recovering from a sprained left knee he suffered during Spring Training practices that forced him to not play in any Grapefruit League games.

The switch-hitter slashed .267/.353/.448 with 37 doubles, 23 homers, and 99 RBI last season for the Oakland Athletics.
