After a slow start in the first half of the season, Michael Conforto has been terrific for the Mets of late. Over his last 12 games, Conforto has five home runs, and has driven in 11 runs. Since the break, he has 12 home runs, 33 RBI, and 31 runs scored in 48 games.
Conforto continued his success on Sunday, as he went 2-for-5 with a home-run and four RBI in the Mets 6-4 win over the Phillies.
He opened the scoring for the Mets in the top of the first, as he drove in Amed Rosario with an RBI single to take an early 1-0 lead. Conforto then struck again during a four run fifth inning, as he belted an opposite field three-run homer to put the Mets ahead for good.
Postgame, Mets manager Mickey Callaway told reporters he thinks Conforto looks really good at the plate after he homered on back-to-back days.
“He’s covering the plate and when he starts hitting the ball the other way like he did today, you know he’s in a good place,” Callaway told reporters.
Conforto also made a nice catch in left field in the sixth to end a Phillies rally. With runners on the corners, Carlos Santana lined a foul ball down the line. Conforto needed to reach through fans and into the seats, but was able to make the catch to end the threat.
With his four RBI day, Conforto tied his career high for the fourth time this season. The last time a Met had more than four games with at least 4 RBI in a season was Carlos Beltran in 2006 with six games.
The slugging lefty told reporters postgame, that it finally feels like things are starting to come together at the plate.
“I think there was a period of time when I was searching for that feeling of being consistent and getting to the right spot when the pitch is coming in,” Conforto said.
Conforto has looked much more comfortable at the plate of late, for the season he is hitting .233/.339/.418 with 17 doubles, 23 home runs, and 63 RBI in 133 games.
