A source tells Michael Mayer of MMO that the Mets have promoted the team’s first-round pick from the 2017 MLB Draft, David Peterson, to the St. Lucie Mets, the organization’s high-A affiliate.
The lefty out of Oregon has taken a leap forward with the low-A Columbia Fireflies this season and is quickly becoming one of, if not the best Mets pitching prospect, with the only other consideration at the moment being their 2016 first-round pick, Justin Dunn.
In his first year starting with a minor league affiliate, Peterson has a 1.82 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 57 strikeouts in nine starts (59 1/3 innings pitched) for Columbia.
The 22-year old was particularly dominant last night, as he limited the Augusta GreenJackets to six hits and one run to go along with ten strikeouts in eight innings of work (95 pitches).
Right now, MLB.com ranks Peterson as the second-best prospect in the Mets farm system, with shortstop Andres Gimenez being the only one that ranks ahead of him. In their assessment of him, they said that Peterson projects in the future as a number three or four starter.
