The New York Mets dropped their fifth straight game as they were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday night at Citi Field.

Pitching

The Orioles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against Jason Vargas. Trey Mancini and Adam Jones started off the game with back-to-back singles to center. Manny Machado then singled off the glove of Asdrubal Cabrera to bring home the first run of the game.

Jones came around to score and make it 2-0 on a Danny Valencia sacrifice fly. After Machado stole second, Vargas struck out Mark Trumbo and got Jonathan Schoop to fly out to limit the damage.

Vargas ran into some trouble again in the second, as Chris Davis walked and Austin Wynns lined a single to left to lead off the inning. After an Alex Cobb sacrifice bunt, Vargas was able to get Mancini to ground out and Jones to fly out to keep Baltimore off the board.

Vargas bounced back in the third as he was helped out by a nice diving catch from Brandon Nimmo and struck out Trumbo en route to his first 1-2-3 inning of the night.

He worked around a leadoff Schoop single in an easy scoreless fourth inning. Vargas ended his night by striking out Mancini looking to open up a 1-2-3 top of the fifth. He settled down nicely as he allowed two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four over five innings.

Seth Lugo needed just sixteen pitches to throw back-to-back perfect innings in the sixth and seventh. Lugo allowed a leadoff single in the eighth, but turned a 6-4-3 double play and made a nice play on a comeback to end his night.

Anthony Swarzak pitched well in his return to the club, as he struck out one and rolled a double play in a scoreless inning.

Hitting

Kevin Plawecki was the Mets first base runner of the game as he drew a two out walk in the bottom of the second.

Leading off the fifth, Jay Bruce snuck a single down the first base line for the Mets first hit of the game. Kevin Plawecki followed that up with a double to left, putting two in scoring position with no outs.

After Adrian Gonzalez popped out, Jose Bautista drove in Bruce as the Mets first run of the game with a pinch hit sacrifice fly. Plawecki however, was stranded at third as Amed Rosario struck out in a ten pitch at-bat.

Bruce flared a one out single to center in the seventh, he later advanced to second on a wild pitch. However, Gonzalez chased a fastball to strike out and end the inning.

The Mets put together a little rally in the bottom of the eighth. Amed Rosario drew a one out walk, and after a pitching change Brandon Nimmo dropped down a bunt and reached on an error. However, Asdrubal Cabrera grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Bruce was on base for the third time, as he drew a two out walk in the bottom of the ninth, but Plawecki popped out to end the game.

On Deck

The Mets will send Zack Wheeler to the mound as they look to avoid the two game series sweep at the hands of Dylan Bundy and the Orioles. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. and the game can be seen on SNY.
