The Mets dropped their second straight game to the Washington Nationals last night as the team lost 5-2.

One of the biggest reasons for the loss was the fact that the team went an atrocious 0-9 with runners in scoring position.

While they were able to score two runs on sacrifice flies, that is just a stat that no team can get away with on any given night.

In the sixth and seventh innings, the team had runners on the corner and both times came up empty.

In the sixth, Juan Lagares singled and then advanced to third on another single from Tomas Nido with one out in the inning. However, Mickey Callaway decided to use Jose Reyes as a pinch-hitter who proceeded to strikeout and move to 0-17 on the season. Amed Rosario then popped out which ended the threat.

Meanwhile, in the seventh, the team got singles from Yoenis Cespedes and Wilmer Flores, which also left runners on the corners with one out. This time, Todd Frazier and Jay Bruce both struck out to end the inning against Ryan Madson.

It is simply inexcusable to come away from those innings with nothing to show for it.

It’s one game. There is no reason, at least yet, to start freaking out about this. However, this cannot be something that becomes a theme for this team throughout the season.

In the past, these are the situations the Mets continuously struggled to deliver in and that just simply is not going to fly this season if they want to contend.

Over the last three games, the team is a mere 4-26 with RISP which is just not going to cut it.

Yes, it’s April, and teams tend to struggle offensively early in the season with the weather being so frigid. The Mets need to hope that is all this is, though. The Mets bats can’t go cold in big-time situations like they did last night.
