The Mets have been looking to add a second baseman this offseason through a trade. The team has already been connected to names like Jason Kipnis, Ian Kinsler, and most recently Josh Harrison.
If the Mets whiff on a trade for a second baseman, they could re-sign Jose Reyes according to Marc Carig of Newsday. On the other hand, a reunion with Neil Walker, whom the Mets traded away on Aug. 12, remains unlikely.
Reyes received league minimum the last two years during his second stint with the Mets. Of course that’s while simultaneously getting paid a combined $37.9 million over the same period of time from the Colorado Rockies who cut him in mid-2016 after he violated MLB’s domestic violence policy.
While Reyes wasn’t the same type of player he was for the Mets from 2003-2011, he produced decent results all while not affecting the Mets’ payroll much at all.
In 2017 Reyes hit .246/.315/.413/.728 with 75 runs, 15 homers, 58 RBI, and a team-leading 24 stolen bases in 145 games and 501 at-bats. Reyes’ defensive wasn’t spectacular, but overall he was good for a -0.6 bWAR and 2.0 fWAR.
