As reported by Michael Mayer of MMO yesterday on twitter, New York Mets first base prospect Peter Alonso has been promoted to the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
Alonso, 22, hit .286/.361/.516 with 23 doubles, 16 home runs and 58 RBI in 308 at-bats for the St. Lucie Mets to begin the season. His 16 homers are tied for the lead in the Florida State League and his .878 OPS is second best.
The Mets drafted the powerful Alonso with their second round pick last year from the University of Florida. Alonso is considered at first base only prospect where his defense is below average.
To put Alonso’s power output in perspective, Michael Conforto had a .462 SLG% in 46 games for St. Lucie in 2015.
We recently ranked Alonso as our No. 9 Mets prospect here at MMO in our post-trade Top 30 and MLB Pipeline has him at No. 10.
Alonso joins the Rumble Ponies in the midst of a postseason push in which their magic number to clinch a playoff spot is only two. In the corresponding move, the Rumble Ponies announced that recently promoted Patrick Mazeika was placed on the disabled list.
