The list of people that believe shortstop prospect Amed Rosario is ready for a call-up just got longer.
Speaking with reporters before the Futures Game, Rosario said he is “100 percent ready” to play in the majors, but he understands that he will have to wait his turn.
“I don’t focus on that,” Rosario said. “What’s important to me is going out there, playing every day, and focusing on the task at hand.”
If you follow Rosario on Twitter, you will often see him end tweets with the hashtag #DontBeSurprisedBeReady. He also had that written on his cleats for the Futures game. When asked about it in an interview with MLB Network during the game, he explained that it is not a plea to be called up.
“That’s not a message to the Mets,” Rosario said through a translator. “It’s more for the fans. Be ready when you come see me. I’m going to perform well. I’m going to do my best. So don’t be surprised, be ready when you come see Amed Rosario play.”
In 83 games for Triple-A Las Vegas, the 21-year-old is hitting .327/.365/.474 with seven homers, 52 RBI, 16 doubles, seven triples and 16 steals. He has also played exemplary defense, something the Mets have lacked this season. With the Mets all but committed to entering the trade deadline as sellers, infield roster spots are bound to open up.
Don’t be surprised if he gets called up in August – be ready.
