Former Met Lenny Harris announced on Twitter that his friend and former Mets pitcher Anthony Young has died after slipping into a coma.
Earlier this year, Young was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor in his brain stem. The 51-year-old former pitcher has been undergoing chemo therapy, and there had been promising reports the brain tumor has shrunk.
Young is most famous for his major league record 27 game losing streak for the Mets from 1992-93.
During that stretch he was 0-14 as a starter and 0-13 as a reliever. However, he did convert 12 straight save opportunities while John Franco was on the disabled list.
Finally, on July 28, 1993, after Young allowed a run in the top of the ninth to put him in position to lose his 28th straight game, the Mets rallied and scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on an Eddie Murray RBI double.
Coincidentally, that rally was started by Jeff McKnight. McKnight passed away two years ago at the age of 52 from leukemia.
