In Game 1 of today’s doubleheader the New York Mets (26-33) beat the Atlanta Braves (27-33) by a final score of 6-1.
Pitching
The pitching was at their best today. The Mets had Robert Gsellman pitching for them and the Braves had Sean Newcomb opposing him. Newcomb was making his MLB debut for the Braves.
Gsellman was phenomenal over 6.2 scoreless innings. It was arguably his best outing of the year and he could have gone deeper in the game had it not been for two errors by Asdrubal Cabrera in the first inning of the game. They were his ninth and tenth errors of the season respectively.
The final line on Gsellman was: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 4 K. Since returning from the bullpen on May 24th, he has a 2.16 ERA in four starts.
He left with a runner on first, two outs and gave way to Jerry Blevins to face Ender Inciarte. Blevins struck out Inciarte to strand the runner.
The eighth was an adventure. Fernando Salas started the eighth inning for the Mets and gave up a homer to Brandon Phillips immediately. Following an error by Jose Reyes, Terry Collins brought in Josh Edgin to face Matt Adams who reached on a single. With two on and one out, Terry Collins called upon Addison Reed for a 5-out save. He struck out Matt Kemp and got Rio Ruiz to ground out.
Reed stayed on for the ninth and picked up his tenth save of the year. More importantly, he only threw 16 pitches which might allow him to pitch game 2.
Offense
Sean Newcomb was great for the Braves in his debut. He went 6.1 innings and only gave up one run on a T.J. Rivera sacrifice-fly.
In the eighth inning, Michael Conforto got on base to lead-off the inning as he tends to do. Yoenis Cespedes followed with a single and Wilmer Flores drove home Conforto with a sacrifice-fly.
The ninth inning is when the Mets broke it open. Neil Walker, who did not start the game, was hit in the right leg. Juan Lagares followed with a double and the Braves intentionally walked Conforto to face Yoenis Cespedes. The move backfired as Cespedes hit a grand-slam to break the game open for the Mets. It was his seventh of the season, giving the Mets a 6-1 lead.
