After Matt Harvey struck out the side in the first inning, his offense exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. With plenty of run support, Harvey tallied his third win of the season.

He labored through five innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits while walking four and striking out six. He needed 103 pitches to get through his outing, only 60 of which were strikes. The two runs scored in the second inning, just after Harvey was sitting on the bench while his team was rounding the bases. Harvey described his night as “a little shaky.”

“It’s not ideal,” Harvey said. “But when you have a big lead like that, especially in the first inning, you really have to stay focused. I was able to settle in toward the end.”

With this outing, Harvey moved to 3-3 on the season and lowered his ERA to 5.36. He continues to have command issues as he had four walks and an inflated pitch count, but he was able to be effective regardless. This start was certainly a step in the right direction for the right-hander.
