The Mets were firing on all cylinders in their 9-3 win over the Padres last night, but the two guys with the most horsepower were first baseman Lucas Duda and left fielder Michael Conforto.
The two combined to go 6-for-8 with two home runs, a double, seven RBIs, and three runs scored.
Duda, who was batting seventh in the order, went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. He raised his season batting average to .236 with the three-hit game. Hopefully this performance can wake up his bat a bit, as he’s been struggling so far this season.
Conforto had two hits in the first inning alone, leading off with a solo home run which came on the tenth pitch of the at-bat. He later singled in two runs during that same inning. His second home run of the game came in the fourth inning off Craig Stammen and was particularly impressive considering it was a curveball below the knees.
“I think it’s just a product of what I’ve been working on,” Conforto said of his performance. “Using the whole field, taking what the pitcher gives me… That single was just a fastball away. It was just a line drive the other way.”
Conforto was 3-for-4 on the day with his two home runs. He raised his average to .333 on the year and possibly even more impressive is his 1.138 OPS.
The Mets will face Jarred Cosart tonight, who Duda and Conforto have enjoyed hitting in the past. Conforto has gone 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk against him, while Duda has gone 3-for-8 with two doubles and three walks against the righty.
