As the calendar turned from April to May, the New York Mets were hoping for better results, as they closed out their last 10 April games with a 3-7 record and in the basement of the National League East.

The Mets got off to a good start in May, taking two out of three games against the Atlanta Braves in an abbreviated series (rained out their final game on May 4) and took the weekend series against the Miami Marlins at home.

Even as the Mets try to work their way back atop the National League East division, the clubhouse drama that has occurred feels more like a soap opera than a baseball team.

Along with the mounting injuries, now including Noah Syndergaard and Travis d’Arnaud, the Mets suspended right-hander Matt Harvey for three games over the weekend for a violation of team rules, according to the team.

According to various reports, Harvey didn’t show up to Citi Field on Saturday, citing a migraine as the issue.

However, reports indicate that Harvey was out golfing earlier in the day Saturday, had the migraine, but had miscommunication with the Mets over reporting the issue.

Whatever the case, this is an ugly situation with their former ace and one that can hopefully be ratified without any negative impact on the field.

The Mets continue a three-game series Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants at home, followed by a weekend series in Milwaukee facing the Brewers.

The Mets have played all 30 of their games against the National League East thus far.

As always, here are your MMO Players of the Week for May 1-7.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: MICHAEL CONFORTO

Michael Conforto is MMO’s Offensive Player of the Week, as he went 8-for-24, with six runs scored, two doubles, one home run, six walks, two intentional walks and seven RBI.

Conforto reached base safely in five of the six games and had three multi-hit games in that span.

Conforto got the Mets on the board early on May 1 against the Braves, clubbing a lead-off home run off Braves ace Julio Teheran.

It was Conforto’s third lead off home run of the season. Conforto later added a two-run single in the fourth, giving the Mets a 6-1 cushion.

The 24-year-old outfielder also played a role in the Mets come from behind win against the Marlins on Friday.

Down four runs in the seventh, the Mets worked a comeback as they scored two runs on singles from Rene Rivera and Asdrubal Cabrera.

Conforto singled to center, loading the bases for T.J. Rivera, to which Rivera promptly doubled on the first pitch he saw from reliever Brad Ziegler, tying tying the game up at seven with Conforto moving to third.

After back-to-back strikeouts of Jay Bruce and Neil Walker, Curtis Granderson was intentionally walked, loading the bases for Wilmer Flores.

The plan backfired, however, as Flores walked, with Conforto scoring from third, giving the Mets the go-ahead run and eventual winning run, 8-7.

As of Tuesday, among outfielders who have hit lead-off, Conforto ranks third in home runs (6), is tied for third in RBI (15) and is second in walks (13).

His 1.040 OPS ranks 9th in all of baseball among qualified hitters as of Tuesday as well.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: PAUL SEWALD

Paul Sewald earns MMO’s Pitcher of the Week, after appearing in three games from May 1-7, totaling 6 1/3 innings, four hits, one run, one walk, seven strikeouts with a 0.79 May WHIP.

Sewald came on in the eighth inning for the Mets in their 9-7 loss to the Braves on Tuesday, May 2, facing the Braves two-three-four batters in Brandon Phillips, Freedie Freeman, and Matt Kemp.

Sewald struck out Phillips on three pitches and walked Freeman on seven pitches before getting Kemp to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Sewald was called upon four days later against the Marlins, providing the Mets with two innings of scoreless ball, en route to a 11-3 Mets victory.

Sewald worked back-to-back 1-2-3 innings against the Marlins on just 25 pitches (16 for strikes).

His best outing was in Sunday’s 7-0 shutout against the Marlins, as Harvey’s replacement Adam Wilk lasted just 3 2/3 innings after allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits.

Sewald saved the bullpen some by pitching 3 1/3 innings (career high, including the minors), giving up one earned run on four hits, no walks, and striking out six (another career high).

Sewald had four straight strikeouts spanning the sixth and seventh innings, setting down Adeiny Hechavarria, Jose Urena and Dee Gordon in the sixth, and striking out Christian Yelich to open the seventh.

Of the 59 pitches Sewald tossed on Sunday, 45 were strikes (76 percent), which is his best strike percentage in the majors thus far.
