The New York Met won 16-5 on Wednesday night against the Atlanta Braves despite Jacob deGrom having his worst start of the 2017 season.
Jacob lasted a season low five innings while allowing a season high five runs on eight hits, five walks and five strikeouts. It was a slog for deGrom who threw 109 pitches with only 68 of them going for strikes. He also had a season low seven swing and miss strikes.
“I honestly don’t know why,” deGrom said of his command issues. “Most important thing is we got a win tonight. That outing is frustrating for me, I walked five guys.”
DeGrom, who rarely shows emotions on the mound, was visibly frustrated late in his start as he demonstrated no command of his pitches. Three of his five walks were issued to the Braves #8 Dansby Swanson, whom is hitting only .156/.234/.229 for the season.
Multiple times during the start, deGrom seemed to be looking and picking at his right index finger where a possible blister could have been forming.
With the win, Jacob is now 2-1 for the year with a 3.68 ERA, 1.364 and is tied for the National League lead with 49 strikeouts.
