According to Adam Rubin of ESPN NY, the Mets expect to stay quiet until the Winter Meetings in early December. While they are currently searching for upgrades at several positions, they don’t expect anything to happen before then and believe talks will slow down soon with Thanksgiving approaching.
A team official told Rubin last week that one area the Mets are prioritizing is centerfield. They want someone who can complement Juan Lagares, who really struggled last season against right handed pitching.
They are also targeting setup relievers, and they are looking to find a potential trade partner for a shortstop. Rubin says the shortstop acquisition has to come in a trade because the free agent market for shortstops is extremely thin.
Ian Desmond is one option on the open market, but he may not even be better than what the Mets already have. He batted .233 this year with a .674 OPS, and will cost the New York their first round pick.
If they are not able to work out a deal, the Mets best option may be to stand pat and go with Wilmer Flores once again, who outproduced Desmond all year. In 137 games, Flores batted .263 with 16 home runs and had a .703 OPS.
