If you thought Daniel Murphy was as good as gone after he rejected his $15.8 million qualifying offer from the Mets… Not so fast.
According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York the Mets are expected to make a legitimate bid for the free-agent infielder.
“And there is a belief within the organization that Murphy might consider the Mets even if they are not the highest bidder because he has been a member of the organization for his entire professional career and appeared to enjoy his time.”
Obviously, the Mets would be making a team-friendly offer for 2-3 years, and nothing close to the four-year $50 million number that’s being tossed around. But still, it is possible Murphy does work something out with the team.
Murphy, 30, batted .281 with a .322 OBP and .449 SLG in the regular season with 38 doubles, 14 home runs and 73 RBI. He had a huge NLDS and NLCS when he hit seven home runs including six in consecutive games, but made two key errors in the World Series.
