The Mets (89-69) were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies (61-97) by a score of 7-5 tonight at Citizens Bank Park.
Offense:
The entirety of the Mets offense came in the first inning on the strength of two home runs.
After the first two batters reached base, Daniel Murphy crushed a three-run shot to right center field, for his 14th on the year.
Later in the inning, Michael Conforto launched a two-run shot to put the nail in the coffin for Phillies’ starter Alec Asher, who was extremely ineffective and labored through a lot of pitches.
A scary moment occurred in the third inning when Yoenis Cespedes was hit by a pitch on his hand. He was removed from the game right away, and under went x-rays.
Thankfully, the tests came back negative, revealing only a contusion and no broken bones. A collective sigh of relief from Mets fans everywhere.
Though the Mets had more opportunities to score, they were never able to do so as the Phillies kept them at bay for the rest of the night.
Pitching:
Logan Verrett got the start for the Mets, and went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out five. What was the most impressive and significant about Verrett’s start was how he retaliated after both Yoenis Cespedes and Kirk Nieuwenhuis were hit by pitches.
Hansel Robles, along with Terry Collins, were ejected later in the game, as Robles threw at Cameron Rupp‘s head as the benches cleared.
Bobby Parnell came in after the ejection of Robles, and promptly surrendered the lead, as let up two runs on two hits, as well as allowing an inherited run to score. He falls to 2-4 on the season, and his ERA balloons to 6.38.
Tyler Clippard then let up a run in the ninth to top off the Phillies come back, as the Mets would fail to rally back and dropped the second game of the series 7-5.
On deck:
The Mets will look to salvage the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon. The Mets starter is Sean Gilmartin, and the Phillies will have Jerad Eickhoff take the mound for them. First pitch is at 12:05 PM.
